Introduction

Remote computing and compact clients have recently become very popular technologies, which have a lot of commercially available implementations. Among them are Microsoft Terminal Server, Citrix MetaFrame, AT&T VNC, Symantec pcAnywhere, Tarantella products and many others. All of them allow for remote access to your applications running at a distant computer, and work very well trough wired wideband networks, which provide 10-100 Mbps on average. However, cellular/wireless and dial-up connections have much lower bandwidth (9Kbps for GSM, 56Kbps for typical dial-up and GPRS), which makes use of wideband-oriented systems impractical.

However, the remote computing market is rapidly growing. Everybody wishes to have efficient access to their data not only trough high-end expensive PDA, but also trough their mobile devices such as intelligent cellular phones. Recently introduce solutions, including WAP and iMode, have appeared to be limited in functionality and require significant development efforts.

We at RL Software Technologies have been carrying on research in the area of efficient graphics compression for several years. Remote computing became one of successful application of our scientific investigations. This research has resulted in development of the Deskope technology and the remote computing product based on this technology.
